Video cards are made for laptops and desktops but there is a lot of difference between video cards of laptops and desktops and their ability to upgrade. Laptop video card upgrade is almost impossible in most cases mainly because laptop video cards are made to fit the tight spaces of laptops and hence their performance is downgraded. Laptop video cards are designed differently than desktop video cards. Similar brand and model video cards like suppose nvidia 8600 gt for desktop will be different from the similar video card nvidia 8600 mgt made for mobile laptops. And also there is a lot of different in performance between the two video cards made for laptops and desktops.

Whether a laptop video card can be upgraded or not mainly depends on the default options provided by the laptop assembling company. There is very little chance that a laptop video card will be upgraded. Recently, there is a lot of work going on by laptop companies trying to provide features or parts of laptops which can be upgraded to some extent. If you have a dell laptop or an alienware laptop, there is a possibility of video card upgrade to some extent. Its not that you can just pick up any laptop video card and upgrade it because you know tight spaces is the biggest issue in a laptop. But, I’m sure you can pickup some better video card for your dell or alienware laptop and upgrade. Just call dell or alienware customer care and they might be able to help you. For other companies check their websites and contact them. Chances are that if your brand provides customizable laptops like dell or alienware do and if you had the options to upgrade video card then but you just took the default video card, then you can still upgrade to a better video card.

Ok, you are not able to play latest games on your computer or blue-ray discs don’t run well. Latest games and blue-ray discs have mind blowing graphics and to fully enjoy them you must upgrade your video card (also called graphics card). Upgraded Video cards are needed to run graphics intensive programs like adobe products which involves editing with images and other such various programs, games and movies etc. As the technology is changing fast, today programs need high power graphics processors to handle the high definition driven content. You may have to upgrade your whole computer in the process of upgrading your video card depending on your requirements like which games you want to run. Sometimes, just upgrading your video card is not enough as your computer is too old to be even compatible with a new hardware like video card.

Upgrading Video Card

Before You actually upgrade your video card, you need to do some research on the internet and also on your current desktop computer if you are already not aware of its configuration. Right now you need to find out following information -

1. Which games you want to play on your desktop ?
2. What are the recommended and minimum system requirements of those games ?
3. What kind of video card do you have in your CPU ( Integrated graphics card or dedicated graphics card) ?
4. What kind of video card slot do you have in your CPU ? ( PCI, AGP, PCI-Express )
5. Other information about your computer like power rating of your system supply, processor speed and RAM.
?

I use video cards mainly for gaming and watching movies. Video cards just improve the delight of watching images or videos to whole new level. If you upgrade video card, you will have a faster computer because your video processing doesn’t occur in CPU anymore and doesn’t use memory from RAM. In fact, video cards have their own memory to be used only for video processing. And after upgrading video card, you’ll see smoother videos and images, your games will run much faster and with great quality.

Graphics Cards are an integral part of any computer without which no computer would be able to display any visuals on monitor. Graphics card is the component in computer machine which processes videos. Graphics card is generally in-built in computer motherboard but if you want high power graphics card so that you can view higher quality images or videos for a better visual experience, you can buy a separate graphics card with higher graphics processing capabilities. Graphics card in-built is called integrated graphics card whereas graphics card bought separately is called discrete graphics card. Discrete graphics card can be very costly depending on the kind of power you want. If you want to play all the latest games, you might want to buy higher end graphics cards for which you may have to pay around $1000. People working on video processing projects also need graphics cards. A normal graphics card can be bought around $200 for a very good visual experience in movies, games and images. Lower end graphics cards can be bought as low as $40 which might not be much improvement over your integrated graphics card. Two biggest manufacturers of graphics cards are Nvidia and ATI. Both have excellent range of graphics cards and you can choose any of them. But, before you choose any graphics card you must get all the information about graphics cards off the internet otherwise it may become a frustrating experience as there are just so many graphics cards to choose from, that you might get too confused and you may end up buying a graphics card which may not be up to the mark of your expectations. So, research a lot about graphics cards and also about your own computer hardware. Because your computer may be too old to accomodate the latest graphics cards.

Graphics Cards Benchmarks. What does it mean by benchmarking of graphics cards? Graphics cards are a computer hardware which is used to render graphics on a video monitor. All the graphics that you see on monitor is rendered by graphics cards. All the computers be it desktop or laptop, all have graphics cards because all of them render graphics on a computer screen. But, different graphics cards have different capabilities and to test a graphics card for these capabilities is called graphics card benchmarking. Benchmarking of different graphics cards help in comparison of graphics cards so that we can compare between graphics cards and decide which one we need. Depending on the quality of graphics cards, some graphics cards can produce better images or videos on the computer screen or play some games better while some graphics cards are useless for playing latest computer games.
