Video cards are made for laptops and desktops but there is a lot of difference between video cards of laptops and desktops and their ability to upgrade. Laptop video card upgrade is almost impossible in most cases mainly because laptop video cards are made to fit the tight spaces of laptops and hence their performance is downgraded. Laptop video cards are designed differently than desktop video cards. Similar brand and model video cards like suppose nvidia 8600 gt for desktop will be different from the similar video card nvidia 8600 mgt made for mobile laptops. And also there is a lot of different in performance between the two video cards made for laptops and desktops.

Whether a laptop video card can be upgraded or not mainly depends on the default options provided by the laptop assembling company. There is very little chance that a laptop video card will be upgraded. Recently, there is a lot of work going on by laptop companies trying to provide features or parts of laptops which can be upgraded to some extent. If you have a dell laptop or an alienware laptop, there is a possibility of video card upgrade to some extent.
